From May to September 2008 I worked with the Society for People’s Action for Development (SPAD) in Bangalore, India. The team at SPAD are leading the way in HIV/AIDS education in the southern States of India. They operate several projects which focus on slowing the rate of HIV/AIDS infection among India’s most vulnerable communities, including sex workers.
The spread of HIV/AIDS in India is largely attributed to the sex worker and migrant trucker communities. Those vulnerable communities find themselves in the industry due to poverty and trafficking. They have little choice but to work in order to feed themselves and their families. The youngest girl I met was trafficked into the industry at the age of 15 years. When we met she was 16 yrs old and had recently given birth to her first child.
Many thanks to all of the men, women and children who allowed me to take their portraits. They asked me to use their images to tell their stories. For more information about the Society for People’s Action for Development (SPAD) please visit www.SPAD.in.
